Job Description

The Head of Automation plays a vital role in managing the automated production environment across multiple broadcast studios. This leadership position focuses on maintaining smooth on-air operations while ensuring every live news bulletin, recorded programme, and special event meets the highest production standards.

You will work closely with editorial teams, production staff, creative departments, and broadcast engineers to deliver high-quality television content. Besides handling technical operations, you will also guide and mentor automation professionals while improving production workflows across the network.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will oversee all automation-related activities and ensure consistency throughout broadcast operations. Responsibilities include:

  • Lead automated studio production and gallery operations.
  • Manage automation systems used during live news broadcasts.
  • Supervise switching between cameras, video sources, graphics, lighting, and audio.
  • Design and improve automation workflows for greater efficiency.
  • Develop automation policies and operating procedures.
  • Ensure programme rundowns are executed accurately using the Newsroom Computer System (NRCS).
  • Coordinate with News, Programmes, Creative, and Engineering departments.
  • Monitor automation systems and activate backup solutions whenever required.
  • Support business continuity and disaster recovery planning.
  • Prepare operational reports and monitor departmental KPIs.
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate automation team members.
  • Assist with technical planning for major news coverage and special broadcasts.
  • Participate in production planning and budgeting activities.

Qualification

Required Education

Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields:

  • Film
  • Media Studies
  • Communications
  • Television Production
  • Graphics
  • Directing
  • Or another closely related discipline

Professional diplomas or certifications in broadcast automation or television production will be considered an added advantage.

Required Experience

Candidates applying for this position should demonstrate extensive experience in broadcast television.

The ideal applicant should have:        

  • At least 10 years of professional experience within a broadcast news environment.
  • A minimum of 5 years working in a senior automation, production control room, or gallery directing role.
  • Strong knowledge of automated television production systems.
  • Experience managing technical teams and live broadcast operations.
  • Proven ability to deliver uninterrupted live programming under tight deadlines.
